first_imgOne of Donegal’s best-known businessmen is going back into the hospitality trade.Mr McGee used to own the Clanree HotelHugh McGee was one of the county’s most successful hotel and bar owners employing up to 450 people during the boom.His Clanmaca Group owned a number of properties including the Clanree Hotel as well as a string of bars such as Sister Saras and the Dry Arch in Letterkenny. However Mr McGee, a native of Gaoth Dobhair, had much of his large operation taken over by the banks during the economic downturn.He has been vocal in his criticism of Ireland’s banks comparing one move to liquidate one of his businesses to “the evictions of old.”He famously addressed 100 of his staff in 2010 when Anglo Irish Bank appointed a liquidator to six of his businesses.He declared “Buyer beware – I have not gone away and I have no intention of going away and will fight to the bitter end for the companies I built.” However the well-known businessman appeared at Letterkenny District Court this week applying for a bar license.Trading as Victoria Properties, Mr McGee was asked by Judge Paul Kelly if he had experience in the licensing trade.Mr McGee replied that he had been in the trade for 30 years.Gardai said they had no objection to the license application.Mr McGee’s solicitor Gary Clarke said that he was finalising the paperwork on the licensing application.
