By Dialogo March 26, 2010 The multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) and embarked Marines from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) completed their support to Operation Unified Response and depart Haiti on March 25th. U.S. Southern Command released the Bataan and its embarked Sailors and Marines following a steady decline in demand for the capabilities of the ship and its crew as relief efforts in the Caribbean nation transitioned from urgent life-saving activities to long-term recovery. Bataan arrived in Haiti Jan. 18 and immediately began supporting U.S. relief efforts led by the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA). Within 48 hours of arriving, helicopter and landing craft from Bataan transported 23 patients with serious earthquake-related injuries to the ship, where they were stabilized and treated before being transferred to follow-on care facilities to begin their long-term recovery. During its two months on station, rotary-wing aircraft from the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and the MEU flew 2,200 missions to aid communities affected by the earthquake, delivering nearly 560,000 liters of bottled water, 200,000 gallons of bulk water, 1.6 million pounds of rations and 15,000 pounds of medical supplies. Helicopters and air cushion landing craft (LCAC) from the ship evacuated 97 patients to the ship’s medical facilities and transported another 524 patients to and from the hospital ship USNS Comfort, aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and to medical facilities throughout Port-au-Prince. Bataan’s crew also assisted residents in the town of Grand Goave, removing 150 tons of rubble, building 65 shelters for 130 families and distributing more than 500,000 meals. “The Marines and Sailors of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and the MEU have once again demonstrated how their speed, flexibility and training can be called upon to help save lives,” said Maj. Gen. Cornell A. Wilson, Jr., commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South. “They brought food, water, medical aid, and hope to the people of Haiti in some of the most devastated parts of the country at a time when getting help into Haiti was extremely challenging.” To date, the U.S. government has contributed more than $779 million in earthquake response funding for Haiti.

After meeting in the ‘Group of Death’ curtain raiser at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013, France and Ghana will renew their rivalry in the semi-finals. Having come off worse in that initial fixture, the Africans’ pursuit of revenge will be a compelling subplot to the encounter as they look to lift the title for a second time. However, the possibility of reaching a first final at this level will be all the motivation France need. The ScheduleFrance – Ghana, Bursa, Wednesday 10 July, 18:00 (local time)The Match of the DayThe Bursa Ataturk Stadium will provide the stage for the heavyweight bout between two teams whose fortunes have followed very different paths since their opening game. After finishing as group runners-up, France steamrollered their way into the last four with a barrage of goals, following up a 4-1 triumph over hosts Turkey with a 4-0 rout of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals.By contrast, Ghana were the last side to reach the knockout stages and only scraped through as one of the best third-placed finishers. After defeating Portugal 3-2, a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Chile ensued, with the winning goal coming with virtually the last kick of the game in extra time. However, the Black Satellites have paid a high price for their taxing route to the last four, with three key players already ruled out: defenders Joseph Attamah and Lawrence Lartey, as well as midfield schemer Moses Odjer.France’s 3-1 win earlier in the tournament was only the second fixture between the two in the competition’s history. The inaugural meeting was a goalless draw in the group stage at Argentina 2001, where Ghana went on to earn a runners-up medal. The Number13 – The amount of goals France have scored on their way to the last four at Turkey 2013, one more than Ghana. The pair are not only the highest-scoring sides in the tournament, but also the most trigger-happy: the Africans have fired 114 efforts goalwards, while their French counterparts have had 86 attempts. Yet the biggest statistical difference between the two is at the other end of the pitch. Les Bleuets have only let in five goals so far, compared to Ghana’s ten, the most of any remaining nation. The Player to watchYaya SanogoAs France’s leading scorer with four goals, striker Yaya Sanogo will spearhead his country’s charge to reach their first ever FIFA U-20 World Cup final. Having found the net against every opponent so far except Spain, Ghana will need to keep a close eye on the new Arsenal front man.The Words“The more we’ve played together as a team, the better we’ve been. That’s very important because we’re going up against a strong Ghana side in the semi-finals,” France striker Jean-Christophe Bahebeck.“If we start believing we can allow ourselves to fall behind again, we’d be completely wrong. We’ve used up all our luck. There’s no way we can keep on conceding goals and let our opponents take the lead. We can win the World Cup, but things have to change in terms of letting in goals,” Ghana forward Ebenezer Assifuah.
MORE: Super Bowl 54 predictions from SN’s expertsWho is the Chiefs’ backup quarterback?Patrick Mahomes is backed up by 11-year NFL veteran Matt Moore. The 35-year-old signal-caller has started 32 games in his NFL career, including two this season when Mahomes was out with a dislocated right kneecap. Moore went 1-1 in those starts, defeating the Vikings and losing to the Packers. For his career, he’s 16-16 as a starter, going 7-6 with the Panthers, who originally signed him as a free agent out of Oregon State, and 8-9 with the Dolphins, where he spent seven seasons. His best season came with Miami in 2011 when he started 12 games, threw for 2,497 yards, and posted 16 TDs (all career highs). For his career, he’s completed 60.1 percent of his passes and has a 49:36 TD-to-INT ratio. Considering Moore was out of football in 2018, he performed well in his stint as the Chiefs’ primary QB this year. Counting the game in which Mahomes got hurt, Moore was 59-of-90 (65.6 percent) for 659 yards, four TDs and no turnovers. The Chiefs scored 67 points in just over 10 quarters with Moore under center. Obviously, Moore doesn’t have the arm strength or the overall talent of Mahomes, but the Chiefs didn’t change their offense much with him at quarterback. They took fewer shots deep downfield, but the overall run-pass ratio was about the same. Clearly, coach Andy Reid trusts Moore to run the offense, and with the receiving weapons around him, he was able to adequately get the job done earlier this year. There’s an old saying in NFL circles that the backup quarterback is the most popular guy in town, but if a second-string QB is forced into action in the Super Bowl, there’s no grace period — he must produce. As the Chiefs and 49ers get set for Super Bowl 54, neither of their fanbases wants to think about the possibility of Patrick Mahomes or Jimmy Garoppolo getting hurt, but considering both have suffered serious knee injuries in the past two years, it’s worth knowing who their respective backups are. Both the Chiefs and 49ers’ backup QBs have started for their teams in the past two seasons, and both performed admirably when called upon. While neither possesses the talent of Mahomes or Garoppolo, both have proven themselves at the NFL level. Let’s take a closer look at the Super Bowl 54’s two most important backups. Who is the 49ers’ backup quarterback?Jimmy Garoppolo is backed up by 24-year-old Nick Mullens, who is in his third season in the NFL. The undrafted Southern Mississippi product started eight games for the 49ers in 2018, going 3-5. He impressed at times, totaling 2,277 yards while completing 64.2 percent of his passes and throwing 13 TDs. However, he also threw 10 INTs — at least one in all but two games. His two best performances came in his NFL debut, when he completed 16-of-22 passes for 262 yards, three TDs and no INTs in a 34-3 win over the Raiders, and in a Week 15 win over the Seahawks, when he completed 20-of-29 passes for 275 yards, one TD and no INTs. At just 6-1, 210 pounds, Mullens doesn’t have the ideal size to play QB in the NFL, but he makes up for that with a willingness to throw downfield, as shown by his 8.3 yards per attempt last year. He played in just one game this season but didn’t attempt a pass. He beat out former Iowa QB C.J. Beathard for the backup job in the preseason. Beathard started 10 games for San Francisco in 2017 and ’18, going 1-9 in those contests. Mullens has a chance to be the second former Southern Miss QB to win a Super Bowl, joining Brett Favre.

SANTA CLARA — And the first 49ers quarterback hurt at an injury-marred training camp is … not Jimmy Garoppolo.C.J. Beathard watched Tuesday’s practice with a wrap — possibly a soft cast — on his right thumb, which he banged into a helmet on his final play of Saturday night’s exhibition opener.A 49ers spokesman called it a “sore” thumb, and although there was no metion of it being a long-term issue, this appears a significant setback in Beathard’s bid to beat out Nick Mullens as Garoppolo’s …
13 April 2007A South African and a Mozambican company are to construct a R4-billion liquid petroleum pipeline between the two countries, reducing South Africa’s reliance on Durban harbour and offering some hope that inland fuel prices might drop in the long term. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has issued a licence to build the pipeline from Maputo to Kendal in Gauteng, via Nelspruit, to Petroline RSA. They will build the pipeline jointly with Petroline SARL of Mozambique.Nersa agreed with the option to build the pipeline from Mozambique, instead of a larger 24-inch line from Durban to Johannesburg, because it would be cheaper. Detailed design and environmental impact assessments for the project, already approved by the two countries, are currently under way.According to Petroline RSA director Pinky Moabi, construction will start at the end of the year and the pipeline should be fully operational by the end of 2009.“We hope that fuel prices will drop in Mpumalanga and some parts of Gauteng, because we will be getting fuel directly from the coast of Mozambique, and we know that fuel prices are lower on the coast than in inland cities,” Moabi said.According to Petroline, the pipeline will carry 3.5-billion litres of fuel a year and supply 25% of the fuel demand in Mpumalanga and Gauteng. The pipeline will run from an existing coastal fuel storage depot at Matola Harbour in Mozambique to Nelspruit, where an inland depot will be built, complete with rail and road loading infrastructure.Absa economist Chris Hart told BuaNews that the pipeline’s effect on prices would in all probability be felt in the long term. “The pipeline is unlikely to have an effect on fuel prices in the shorter term as the consumers would have to pay for it,” Hart said. However, the pipeline “might cut costs to a certain extent in the main market in the long run.“Currently, about two thirds of South Africa’s fuel is imported,” Hart added. “There is refinery capacity shortage in the country.”The licence to build the pipeline went to Petroline ahead of state-owned Petronet, which Nersa spokesperson Nhlanhla Cebekhulu put down to Petroline’s strong empowerment credentials.Source: BuaNews
