There were no major injuries and maybe they do need to stop at 10pm but other than that this is a tradition of good clean family fun atleast at my house . Agree people need to clean up after themselves but maybe fines can be given to property owners if the street in front of their house is left trashy . Report Reply 3 replies · active 317 weeks ago +26 Vote up Vote down Serious · 317 weeks ago Ok, let’s go this route.. How many people were arrested on July 1-4, having to do with fireworks? How many times did the Fire Department have to go out to calls related to fireworks? I choose not to go anywhere during this time, except during the day, because I KNOW PEOPLE ARE SHOOTING OFF FIREWORKS IN THE STREETS!! Yes, people need to clean up after themselves, however, this holiday brings out the neighbors, and allows them to unite the neighborhood in some areas. Someone needs a little less time on their hands… Report Reply 0 replies · active 317 weeks ago +28 Vote up Vote down Cathy Page · 317 weeks ago Aw, come on, now. The Fourth of July is a favorite holiday for our family! The kids love shooting off fireworks. I know they are loud, and they can be dangerous when not properly supervised, and they are messy, but so are dogs and kids and motorcycles, etc. Most things that are that much fun has some kind of drawback to them, but when you weight it out, the fun and memories are way bigger than the noise and the mess. I hope the council votes to keep fireworks. It’s only 4 days out of the year, and it’s an American tradition! Report Reply 0 replies · active 317 weeks ago +8 Vote up Vote down concernedaunt · 317 weeks ago My biggest problem with the fireworks is the MESS!!! People shoot the fireworks off in the street and then they leave the mess for others to clean up or for the street dept. to clean up. No one should leave a mess for someone to clean up and this problem needs to be enforced. I also think that time for shooting fireworks should be shortened. I know every night I could hear fireworks being shot off way after midnight. This needs to stop. I expressed my concerns several years ago and was bombarded with emails from the then council members with regard to “commerce.” I am not saying they should only be sold for one day, but how about thinking about our population and the health and well being of all our residents. I think the 4th of July should be hailed and respected….on the 4th of July!! The very meaning of it is changed in my opinion when you carry it out as long as this community does. Too long and too large!!! Report Reply 3 replies · active 316 weeks ago -10 Vote up Vote down cheers · 317 weeks ago How about no shooting off fireworks while riding a hours with a child in your arms in a parade route..geez people its a holiday..about next no trick or treating or Christmas lights. Report Reply 0 replies · active 317 weeks ago +1 Vote up Vote down WHSmom · 317 weeks ago I am not opposed to having fireworks…that is great..BUT let’s go by the rules…none after 10….and only shoot off what you buy IN Wellington….and don’t make your own make shift fireworks..daughter had pictures fall off the wall from the fireworks going off….bet those weren’t bought in Wellington…AND NONE after the fourth..heard firecrackers go off for 3 days after the 4th…AGAIN follow the rules… Report Reply 1 reply · active 317 weeks ago +15 Vote up Vote down anonymous · 317 weeks ago Seems the “fun police” are always at the ready to bring darkness to anything enjoyable. Independence Day – and the little bit of revelry tht comes with it – is but a small “slice of Americana” that we have far too little of anymore. Why is it that some “grumblers” would even wish to foist THEIR way of thinking on everyone else? If someone in your neighborhood is having too much fun, simply knock on their door and tell them you don’t like that. If they’re making a mess, ask them to clean it up! How hard is that? But don’t try to shove another RULE or REGULATION or LAW down our throats, we’re kinda tired of it. Report Reply 0 replies · active 317 weeks ago +26 Vote up Vote down Larry · 317 weeks ago Please folks remember when you were a kid. The thrill of shooting of fireworks before the fourth and then celebrating the holiday and shooting even more. It is a special holiday that should be celebrated in a special way. It is time for family and friends getting together and spending time celebrating the great country. So many have tried to ruin and a lot are working hard at it. They have taken away so much on the cause of being politically correct. Don’t take this away. Report Reply 0 replies · active 317 weeks ago 12345Next » Post a new comment Enter text right here! The council decided it will revisit the issue at a later date.During the audience participation Wiley made the following statement:“I think the fireworks got out of hand this year… It wasn’t too well enforced. I couldn’t get up and down my street because of all the fireworks. I spoke to a lady who works at Sterling House and she couldn’t get there because of the fireworks by the apartments near Sterling House.“In short of banning all fireworks, which I would be in favor of, they should be banned in residential areas. They should only be shot in parks or ballfields or wherever.â€Perry said he had to pick up fireworks residue from his yard for two days and wasn’t able to get on his roof of his house but worried about fireworks up there.“The length of time when fireworks are being shot is too long this year,†Wiley said. “10 a.m. to 10 p.m. is plenty of time to detonate fireworks. Everyone likes to stay up past 10 p.m. but on the fourth of July I went to sleep at 12:15 a.m. because people were still shooting off then even though they weren’t supposed to.â€He also said that the size of the fireworks needs to be addressed. You can hear some of them pop off more than a mile away. He suggested posting rules on shooting fireworks.Wellington City Council member Vince Wetta said he has been gone during the holidays for five or six consecutive years, but was around this year and was surprised how much things have changed.“Fireworks are bigger, they are prettier than they were in the past,†Wetta said. “I don’t think we should ban fireworks because that can’t be enforced. But I’d like to look at the current ordinance.â€Council member B.J. Tracy said when he first got on the council several years back he had suggested banning fireworks because he had worked for the fire department and about the liability attached to it.“They about hung me from the nearest flag pole for suggesting it,†Tracy said. “Then we talked about restricting the area (to shoot off fireworks). If I remember right the opinion then was if you had designated fireworks area, then it would cause the city more liability because we would be congesting people together – which could result in more accidents.â€Wellington Mayor Roger Stallbaumer suggested the city council look at the issue during a future work session.Follow us on Twitter.
