John Mayer Sits In With Bob Weir For Five Grateful Dead Classics In LA [Watch]

first_imgLoad remaining images It’s been a busy few days for guitarist John Mayer! The festivities began last Friday, when Mayer made his debut as a special guest of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York, NY. Watch here. Not only did the guitarist play a full set with Almost Dead, but he stayed in the Big Apple and joined Alicia Keys during her surprise performance in NYC’s Times Square on Sunday night. The guitarist must have immediately jumped on a flight to Los Angeles, because he was spotted at a Bob Weir concert at the famed Wiltern Theatre last night. Weir has been on the road supporting his new release Blue Mountain, treating fans to a selection of new cowboy-themed originals and classics from the Grateful Dead catalog. As Mayer had been playing said classics all summer long with Dead & Company, his appearance last night was a real treat for those in attendance.Mayer emerged during the second set, lending a hand on a rockin’ version of “Jack Straw.” The sit in marked three consecutive surprise appearances from Mayer in four days, as well as the first time that Mayer and Steve Kimock have shared the stage. Mayer continued on to play “Morning Dew” and “I Know You Rider,” with Matt Berninger of The National emerging to sing vocals on the two songs. After “Rider” ended the second set, Bob Weir returned and performed a solo acoustic rendition of “Ki-Yi Bossie” from his new album. He then welcomed back his entire band, as well as Mayer and Berninger, to close out the show with two more beautiful songs: “Peggy-O” and “Ripple.”Watch some of the musical magic below.Jack StrawMorning Dew > I Know You RiderPeggy-ORippleThe full setlist can be seen below, as well as a gallery featuring Bob Weir courtesy of photographer Steve Rose (unfortunately photographer restrictions did not allow for images to be taken at the end of the night.) Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan: Legend who wreaked havoc with a smile

first_imgNew Delhi: Legendary Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan turned 48 on Friday. Considered one of the greatest bowlers of all time, Muralitharan’s extraordinary career tally of 800 Test wickets stands alone in the list of all time highest wicket-takers in the longest format of the game.Muralitharan was part of a wave of great spinners that came to dominate world cricket at the turn of the century. When he made his debut in August 1992, star India all-rounder Kapil Dev was the all time highest wicket-taker in Tests and there was not a single spinner among the top 10 international wicket-takers at the time.Muralitharan, alongwith Australia’s Shane Warne and India’s Anil Kumble, however changed that. He climbed to the top of the ICC bowler’s rankings in 2004.But the first half of Muralitharan’s career in international cricket was also defined by him needing to prove the legality of his action time and again. Images went around of him bowling shirtless with sensers on his torso and cameras capturing him before biomechanical experts at the University of Western Australia so as to prove the legality of his action.Another time, he bowled in front of television cameras with a steel brace on his bowling arm to prove the legality of his action. Many of his contemporaries — team mates and opponents alike — and commentators who worked on Sri Lanka’s matches at the time have repeatedly condemned the umpires and concerned authorities at the time for putting him under the scanner.Muralitharan played 133 Tests in which he picked up record 800 wickets. He also took 534 ODI wickets in 350 matches, making him the most successful bowler in the shorter format as well. He retired from Test cricket in 2010 and his last ODI was the 2011 World Cup final against India which Sri Lanka lost at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Portugal Crowned Euro2016 Champions

first_imgCristiano Ronaldo’s dream of a major trophy with his native country, Portugal manifested last night as the Real Madrid star and his teammates snatched a late 1-0 winner against France to win the Euro2016 last night. He was stretchered off in tears but an extra-time goal by Eder saw Portugal beat hosts France 1-0 in yesterday’s Euro 2016 final to win their first major tournament. The victim of a heavy challenge by Dimitri Payet, Ronaldo went off in the first half, but returned to the touchline to see Lille striker Eder settle the game with a low 25-yard strike in the extra time at Stade de France.Twelve years after losing 1-0 to Greece as hosts of Euro 2004, Portugal inflicted the same fate on France, who were seeking a cathartic victory eight months on from the Paris attacks that left 130 people dead.France coach Didier Deschamps had hoped to lead his side to a fourth major tournament win, and third on home soil after Euro 1984 and the 1998 World Cup, when he was captain. But it was Ronaldo’s Portugal who prevailed. The victory ended Portugal’s run of 10 straight defeats against France, who had eliminated them in the semi-finals at Euro 1984, Euro 2000 and the 2006 World Cup.
