first_img Facebook By Jon Zimney – February 7, 2021 2 483 Man killed in shooting late Saturday night in South Bend identified Google+ Facebook IndianaLocalNews Google+ WhatsApp (Photo supplied/The St. Joseph County Homicide Unit) A 30-year-old man was killed in a shooting in South Bend.The shooting happened just before 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 in the 600 block of South Walnut Street, just south of Pulaski Park.Police were called to the scene on the report of gunfire and found the victim, Charles J. Miltenberger III of South Bend lying on the ground, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds.Miltenberger was pronounced dead at the scene.There was no immediate word of any suspects, arrests or the circumstances that led to the shooting.Anybody with information is encouraged to contact the St. Joseph County MetroHomicide Unit at 574-235-5009 or Crime Stoppers at 288-STOP.The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office released the following information:On February 6, 2021 at 11:23 p.m. South Bend Police officers responded to the600 block of S. Walnut Street in South Bend, IN regarding reports of gunfire andan individual lying on the ground. When officers arrived, they discovered a malewho had suffered gunshot wounds. Officers were unable to resuscitate the victimand he was pronounced deceased at the scene.A representative of the St. Joseph County Coroner Office was contacted and perprotocol, the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit [C.M.H.U.] was activatedand is currently handling the investigation. C.M.H.U. investigators have identifiedthe victim to be: CHARLES J. MILTENBERGER, III, 30 years old, a resident ofSouth Bend, IN.This is an active and on-going death investigation. An autopsy will be conductedon Monday, February 8, 2021 in Kalamazoo, MI.
